Garudasana (Eagle or Standing and Balancing Pose)
Garudasana or the Eagle pose – Garuda means Eagle in Sanskrit – is a simple yet powerful pose that involves twofold twists of the extremities in one pose. The twists and stretches in this pose also give practitioners a new range of movements for the joints and the extremities. Garudasana involves simple body twists, especially for the arms and the legs.
Instructions: 1) From Utkatasana, shift your weight onto the left leg. 2) Bend the right leg, lifting the foot from the floor and cross your right thigh over your left. 3) Hook the right foot around the left calf, hugging or cupping the calf muscle. 4) Bring the arms out in front and cross the left arm over the right and bring the palms to touch. 5) Lift your elbow while while keeping your shoulders level and even. 6) Hold for 5-10 breaths and repeat on the other side. Remember to come out of your pose steadily and in control. |
Remember: the purpose of this pose is to strengthen your legs, improve your balance and strengthen your shoulders.
